On Friday the Folk, one of southern Ontario’s newest and most exciting indie-pop bands played a well-received set at the Central in downtown Toronto. The Folk recently took to the main stage at Hillside Festival (which took place in their hometown of Guelph) and Emma joined an ensemble of…
Future of the Left, and it’s predecessor both in sound, style and members, Mclusky, is a band that defies easy definition. Unlike the majority of contemporary eccentric music, the band is consistently listenable. That said, the featured song here, “Lapsed Catholics”, is lyrically level with a particularly eloquent conspiracy theorist’s rants (think David Icke, pissed at Fox News and scaled down a few notches, no pun intended).
If that song isn’t enough to get you, dear reader, into this incredible band, please have a look at the tracklisting for the rest of the album:
- “Arming Eritrea” - 2:57
- “Chin Music” - 1:56
- “The Hope That House Built” - 3:41
- “Throwing Bricks at Trains” - 2:36
- “I Am Civil Service” - 2:17
- “Land of My Formers” - 2:47
- “You Need Satan More Than He Needs You” - 2:46
- “That Damned Fly” - 2:07
- “Stand by Your Manatee” - 2:08
- “Yin/Post-Yin” - 2:54
- “Drink Nike” - 2:33
- “Lapsed Catholics” - 4:15

feelings not backed by manliness
not that I’m manly
stranded and lonely crop
up in my dreaming then
only then have I come to
realizing the comfort i’d know
if ever you were like that.
but sadly and lonely a day
spent inside a haze on the side
walk back to the desk
with no one to call though I’d love
to i’m lonely
chat with the egg and smoke
half a pack
that smoking might bring me into
your mind as you come briefly
to mine, a flash before fire
each time I inhale.
